Five Ways to Clear Space for Gifts You Receive at Christmasby Lutes Custom Cabinetry on 2018-12-13 10:47:21
It's so much fun to receive Christmas gifts, especially when they end up being items you've had on your list for a long time. But if there's any downside at all to receiving gifts, it's finding room to store them in a home that might already be filled to capacity. Whether it's finding space in a cramped closet for those new coats, hats, or sweaters—or finding a spot in your kitchen for that shiny new standing mixer you've been dreaming of—making room for gifts while maintaining organization can be a challenge! After all, your new items won't do a bit of good if you can't access them easily. Here are some things you can do to make room for your new gifts.
Consider custom-built solutions. Whether it's an entire kitchen remodel with built-in storage to organize all your small appliances and gadgets, or a custom-built TV surround with drawers and shelves to store your new electronics, custom solutions tailored to fit your unique home and belongings can help you get the most out of your space. At Lutes, we build everything from custom kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room cabinetry and storage solutions to custom entertainment centers and desks.
Supplement with freestanding shelves. If custom-built storage solutions aren't in your near future, that doesn't mean you have to compromise when it comes to organization. If you have space in a closet, basement, or other area, adding some freestanding shelves can be a great way to organize your belongings while keeping them easily accessible. Freestanding shelves are a great place to store items you only use once or twice a year, such as coolers, luggage, seasonal decorations, or even kitchen items such as punch bowls or ice cream makers (unless you enjoy making ice cream year round, of course!). Storing smaller items in clear totes on shelving units will allow you to easily find and access your items while keeping them protected from dust or potential insects or rodents.
Freestanding shelving units can sometimes even work in a bathroom, laundry room, or mudroom, depending on how much space you have. For example, if you find that your bathroom vanity is overflowing with extra linens or toiletries, a freestanding shelving unit that is made to fit over the toilet could give you the extra space you need.
Get rid of things you no longer use or need. If your Christmas gift is replacing an older item that is still in good condition, consider selling your older item, donating it to a family member or friend (after first asking if it's something they would actually like), or donating it to a local charity. Look into recycling options in your area if your item is worn out or beyond repair, or throw it away if it can't be recycled. Once your schedule opens up a bit more after Christmas, that's a great time to go through all your things and get rid of items you no longer use or need.
Purchase furniture that includes built-in storage solutions. Storage ottomans in a living room make a great place to stow away those new throw blankets or pillows. Chests or storage benches at the foot of a bed make the perfect nook for sitting to put on socks or shoes, and they double as a place to keep that new flannel sheet set or spare quilt. Have a bedroom with a small closet? Beds with built-in storage drawers beneath them give you a place to keep foldable clothes or even an entire off-season wardrobe so that you can actually find what you're looking for in your closet.
Repurpose items you no longer need that are taking up space. When you get new gifts, it can be tempting to automatically get rid of your older items. But if they're still in good shape or can easily be refurbished, think about ways you could repurpose them. Pinterest is an invaluable resource to get ideas for repurposing things, especially when it comes to furniture. If you have something you're thinking about repurposing, chances are you'll find dozens—if not hundreds—of great ideas on Pinterest or other websites for ways to repurpose that item.
